Recently, friend of mine told me about the embarrassment that the recent Miss Singapore, Ris Low, brought to her own nation in a fashion interview on how she dressed up and present herself.
I had personally watched the video on YouTube and me as a Malaysian, to be fair, have NO problem understanding her at all. We Malaysian stay just across the sea and most of the Chinese descendants from both Singapore and Malaysia share a very similar accent in English, although sometimes the Singaporean insists they speak a better version of it. (yea...right.)
I must say her English wasn't perfect, and most of the time she didn't know what she was talking.
She'd probably feeling a wee bit anxious during the interview, which i think is totally fine.
Well, obviously the interviewer speak a much fluent English and I had noticed that she did tried her best to lead her throughout the interview. Ris obviously had difficulties understanding what the media is expected from her. She tried too hard to make the interview interesting, but it turned out interestingly awkward.
Doesn't matter but my point is she was pulled down from her throne just because of that. Even before the credit card fraud thing was found out. I was shocked, alright she wasn't perfect in speech, but you can better off educate her before letting her representing the country. At least she made the effort to performed well and won the competition, right? Now that she's a criminal that gave a better reason.
To be honest one of my best friend do speak like her but i don't find anything wrong with that, especially after i went through the other YouTube videos about the reaction on Singapore public have on her speech during the interview, MOST of them speak like her, i even seen worse ones that criticized her about her speech, such hypocrites! Come on, we're all Asians after all, English isn't our first language, even if it is , it is very much influenced by accents in places we stay. So why be so harsh on Ris? Some even said that they fell embarrassed about her, about the credit card fraud, yes, but about the presentation of speech, ARE YOU FREAKING SURE? then are you embarrassed of yourself? You might think that i'm being mean but i'm not sure. To me they are way meaner!
Lots of people said she dont represent Singapore, well i think she does, LOL. (right, dont take me seriously, it's just a joke). You may disagree with me but Judge me after you had watched the clip below, i feel for Ris. poor girl. : (
